Robert Woodson

I love family stories and this one about one of our ancestors is fascinating. It’s about  the 8th grandfather of my generation on Grandma Gibson’s side (you can figure your relationship from here. 

Col Robert “Potato Hole” Woodson was a Colonel in the Virginia militia. His father was killed when he was attacked by Native Americans while attending to his patients (he was a doctor). The Natives then attacked the family home. The mother put one son under a wash tub, the other in the root cellar (potato hole). The children were then nicknamed based on where they were hidden during the attack.  Below is the rifle used by Sarah Woodson to protect her sons.
